How To Name Your RV: The Story Behind Stardust

How to name your RV (earth from space with stars in background)

Choosing the perfect name is a rite of passage for any road-tripping couple learning how to name your RV. We knew ours needed a name with personality – something bold, meaningful, and just a little bit fabulous. Enter Stardust.

Even before we signed the papers, Stephanie declared, “We need to give her a name.” A strong woman’s name. Something with power, grace, and a touch of glam (According to Steph, “she fancy”). I agreed – but I felt we needed to spend some time with the RV first to get it right.

Stephanie already had a name in mind: Dolly – not just for Dolly Parton, but because she’s a force of nature. Fancy but fierce. Still, I stood by my idea to wait and let the RV’s name reveal itself.

Once we picked her up, I drove her straight to the storage facility, where she’d live until we’re ready to hit the road full-time. Over the next few weekends, we dropped off our Amazon Prime Day haul and gradually got to know her. (Seriously, Prime Day could not have come at a better time.)

After a few visits – and some bonding time – I started thinking more seriously about how to name your RV in a way that blended Stephanie’s vision and, well… my Star Wars obsession. We had just finished watching Andor and Rogue One, so inspiration wasn’t far off.

That’s when it hit me: Jyn Erso. The badass heroine from Rogue One. Jyn represents everything we wanted – courage, resourcefulness, and hope. But I had one hesitation. Her name, spelled Jyn, sounds a lot like gin. I didn’t want to explain at every campground that our RV wasn’t named after happy hour.

So, I dug deeper into the Star Wars lore – as a true fan does – and found the perfect compromise: Stardust.

If you’ve seen the movie, you’ll know Stardust was the nickname Jyn’s father gave her. It’s tender, strong, and – in a twist of galactic irony – the codename for the Death Star during its construction.

That’s right. Our RV shares a name with both a rebel daughter and a planet-destroying superweapon. It’s poetic. It’s powerful. And with its silver and black paint job, it even looks a little like the Death Star.

Coincidence? Maybe. But I like to think the Force had a hand in it.

So if you’re wondering how to name your RV, start with what matters to you – a meaningful connection, a shared story, a little pop culture magic. With the right mix of personality and inspiration, your RV’s name will find you.
